What does EXIF data reveal?

EXIF metadata can reveal specific facts about a photo — such as where and when it was taken and what device captured it — but only what the file actually contains, never more. This page explains what is genuinely possible, without exaggeration.

Location

If GPS metadata is present, it can reveal the coordinates where the photo was captured, often accurate to within a few meters. This is directly observed data, not a guess — but it is only present if the capturing device had location services enabled at the time.

Date and time

Most photos include a capture timestamp. Combined with other photos, this can reveal patterns, though a single timestamp on its own only tells you when that one file says it was created or last modified.

Device information

Camera make and model are commonly present, and can indicate the type of device used — for example, a specific smartphone model.

Author and software

If an Artist, Author or Copyright field was filled in — manually or by editing software — it will appear in the metadata. Many consumer photos have this field empty.

What EXIF does NOT reveal

EXIF data does not identify people, does not reveal information that was never recorded, and is not present at all in files that have already had metadata stripped (for example, many messaging apps strip EXIF from photos automatically, though behavior varies by app).
